Bench-Made vs Production Upholstery Frames: A Trade Guide
The Short Answer: It Comes Down to Joinery, Wood, and Who Touches the Frame
If a client asks why one sofa costs four times more than another that looks nearly identical in a rendering, the honest answer lives inside the frame. A bench-made frame is built by one or two craftspeople who cut, join, and fit each component by hand, typically in kiln-dried maple or alder, with doweled and corner-blocked joints. A production frame is built on a line, often in engineered hardwood or plywood, with stapled or glued joints designed for speed and consistency at volume.
Neither is wrong. But they behave differently over twenty years, they upholster differently, and they take customization very differently. Knowing which one a project actually needs is the skill, and it is worth being fluent in both.
What You Get With a Bench-Made Frame
Start with the wood. A proper bench-made frame uses kiln-dried hardwood, usually hard maple, milled to full thickness. Kiln drying to around 6 to 8 percent moisture content matters because it keeps joints from loosening as the frame acclimates to a dry Manhattan apartment or a coastal Los Angeles house. The joints themselves are double-doweled and glued, then reinforced with corner blocks that are screwed and glued, not just stapled.
Then there is the suspension. Bench-made work typically means eight-way hand-tied springs on a webbed base, which lets the builder tune the sit zone by zone: firmer at the front rail, softer in the middle, supportive at the back. In our New York and Los Angeles workrooms, this is also where we adjust for the client's actual body and how the piece will be used, something a production spec sheet cannot do.
Finally, customization is native rather than an exception. Arm height to the quarter inch, a deeper seat for a tall client, a tight back on one side of a sectional and loose cushions on the other. On a bench, these are conversations. On a line, they are change orders, if they are possible at all.
Where Production Frames Earn Their Place
Production frames are not the villain of this story. For a media room ottoman, a guest room bench, or a hospitality project with forty identical lounge chairs, a well-made production frame is often the right call. Good factories use CNC-cut engineered hardwood that is dimensionally stable and consistent, and sinuous spring suspensions that perform respectably for their price point.
The tradeoffs are real, though. Sinuous springs sit firmer and flatter than hand-tied coils and cannot be tuned. Stapled joints hold well initially but are harder to repair, and engineered woods do not take reupholstery as gracefully. Staples pulled and reset repeatedly in plywood eventually stop holding, which matters if the piece is meant to be recovered every decade rather than replaced.
A useful rule: if the piece will be sat in daily, recovered over its lifetime, or customized in any meaningful way, specify bench-made. If it is decorative, lightly used, or needed in quantity on a schedule, production can serve the project and the budget honestly.
Questions to Ask Before You Specify
Whoever builds your frame, ask the same five questions. What species of wood, and is it kiln-dried solid hardwood or engineered? How are the joints made: doweled and corner-blocked, or stapled? What is the suspension: eight-way hand-tied, sinuous, or webbing? Can the frame be modified for this client's dimensions? And can it be reupholstered in fifteen years without heroics?
The answers tell you quickly what you are paying for and what your client is actually getting.
